Congratulations you have Awakened. Someone will be along shortly to tell you about the new world you have just joined into. After they give you “the speech” of what you are there will be a lot of choices to make and things to do. It might be a little overwhelming. Secure the Basics – These are the basic things that you need to be a functioning human in the World of Darkness. These are living area, transportation, communication, income source and weapon and fighting style of choice.
Experienced Unseen Sense – Of all of your tools this is, in my opinion, the most important. These lets you know something strange is happening. This is usually the Point A that leads to the Point B.

Magical Tools – These keep you from bringing down the wrath of reality. If you keep your starting spells small then your magical tools should keep you out of trouble with your Paradox.

Know your order’s Philosophies – If your character’s path is what they are, then the order would be why they do what they do. Each Order has a set of philosophies. Learn what they are and how to progress through your Order.
Sanctum – This is where you do you cool magic stuff. It might be a different location from your living area or you might live in your Sanctum.

Library – After you have a place to put one. This should be a starting collection off your knowledge. You should either have one of your own or have access to one.

Have you gone to Consilium? – If your town has a Consilium then you will need to meet them at some point in time. Might as well get this over with. This can be a resource for items spells and missions.
p. 43-55 Sanctum and Sigil
Know the rules of the town (Lex Magica). Ignorance is not bliss in Mage: The Awakening. Ignorance can get your killed or worse. Better know what the laws are.

Do you know the main positions of Mages in town? You should find out who they are and what they do.

Own a Hallow – Magic is fueled by mana, make sure you have a source. After you have your own place and know where you can go and where you cannot go, the next step is to get your resources.

Started or Joined a Cabal – Chances are these will be your other party members.

Tapestry – Take a moment with the group and design your cabal’s Tapestry. It is how you town will know your cabal.

I’m not a big Mage the Awakening fan or Were-Wolf fan, but I do love Vampire and I like the Wolrd of Darkness as a whole. These are some great tips that can even be used to help players in other games as well, not the specifics, but the broad idea of figuring out whats what in your scenario.
